After his explosive end to 2012, this was supposed to be the season da Costa won the FR3.5 championship and earned a promotion to F1 for 2014. But his and Arden Caterham's season never quite came together like it had in 2012, as car problems and the occasional driver error left him on the periphery of the title fight between McLaren juniors Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne. After losing out to GP3 champion Daniil Kvyat for a Toro Rosso F1 drive he replaced the Russian at the Macau Grand Prix, nearly taking a second consecutive victory.
